Award Winning Boston Marathon Photo – 2024 Platinum Medalist

We’re excited to announce Paula Swift of Paula Swift Photography, Inc. in Sudbury, MA is a 2024 Platinum Medalist in the
Professional Photographers of America – International Photographic Competition.

Her sports image titled “Runny Colors” made it to the final four in the image competition down in Louisville Kentucky and landed in the top two images in the Sports Category.
This live competition took place during Imaging USA Saturday January 27^th, 2024 where her photograph started in the first round of 32, then 2^nd round of 16, 3^rd round of 8 and finally made it to the Final Four.
Then those who made it to the Final Four waited until Monday evening January 29^th, 2024 to see if their image would make it to the top. It was broadcasted live so family and friends could watch from home too.
This is the first time PPA had the IPC this way and it was fun and exciting to be there live and cheer on photographers from all over the world.

The story behind this photograph; It’s from the 2023 Boston Marathon as the runners made their way through a very wet Framingham on their way to Boston.
What is great about this image, there is no Photoshop! This specific category as well as the Reportage/Photojournalism category; you have to capture it in camera ( no photoshop magic allowed).
The photographers are only allowed color correction/ cropping/brightening/darkening of the image.

How was this image created in camera? Paula panned the runners and their reflections as they ran by me.
This created the blur by using a slow shutter; 1/15^th at F16, ISO 200 with her Canon R5 and 70-200 RF lens at 84mm. No tripod used, the camera was handheld to be able to pan the runners effortlessly.

Paula Ferazzi Swift got her start in photography as a staff photojournalist at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in Worcester, Mass.
