Worcester Six | Worcester Cold Storage Fire

20 years ago on December 3rd, 1999 six Worcester firefighters died while fighting the Worcester Cold Storage Fire. I was there that night as a staff photographer at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in Worcester, Mass. What I thought was a routine 3 alarm fire at the abandoned warehouse just a few blocks from the newspaper. I had photographed a few smoking but quick fires at this location before. Little did I know it would be become a devastating night in Worcester. I spent weeks to months covering stories with the talented T&G staff there as we tried to tell the story of the loss of these six brave men. It feels like it just happened. I can still remember that night and everything I saw, the smell, the sounds and the panic-despair on the faces all those firefighters as they tried to find their brothers. So many details still come back to me as I look at these images. While I hated to be the storyteller that night, I know photographic history like this does has its importance in our world.
What I can not write in my words, I could tell with my eyes for all to see.

I’m no longer in the field of news photojournalism.  I left my position as a staff photographer after 10 years when I welcomed my 2nd son in 2005 and a 3rd son just a year and half later. I still use my skills as a photojournalism to tell stories of families through my portrait photography. There isn’t a day that doesn’t go by that I don’t think about my news days and all that I had witnessed that night and months following.

For my photography friends. I was still film back then so these were photographed with my Nikon F100, Fujifilm 70-200 mm and 17-35 mm lenses

Tips on Photographing Children | Boston Photographer

I was honored to be interviewed by baystateparent magazine about tips on photographing children in a fun and stress-free way I could share with their readers. This coupled with my book on Storytelling Portrait Photography – How to Document the Lives of Children and Families has been helping families and photographers photograph children and help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera. I love offering a more relaxed and stress free approach to photographing them and it shows in my style of photojournalistic photography.  This helps to capture everyone more naturally and who they really are. It’s no longer “say cheese” and look at the camera. It’s about those moments of laughter, hugs and even those quiet little moments in between that are being framed, hung on walls and treasured in photographic albums in homes across the world.  I was blessed to a staff photojournalist at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in Worcester, Mass from 1995-2005. This amazing experience taught my eye to capture the unexpected while creating beautiful images that I capture today for families from all across New England.

Favorite tips I offer to photographing children …

• Let your children have fun and be themselves
• Don’t worry about them looking at the camera
• Give them something to do: throw leaves, eat watermelon outside, blow bubbles, take them jokes to make them giggle and for young children playing peek-a-boo is great too.

• Let them be natural. What do they like to do? Are they into a sport, swinging, dancing or picking flowers…capture them doing that.babystateparent
• Include their favorite toy or stuffed animal
• If you want a nice smile, don’t ask them to say, “Cheese!” Have them say “spaghetti” or “zucchini” this will provide a more natural smile and create giggles.
• Avoid nap time, lunch time, and times of day when your children are not in their best moods.
• Get the family pet involved, which makes everyone behave more naturally.
• Bribery? It’s OK,  Whether is a special trip to get ice cream after their session or even as simple as some stickers
• Don’t force your children to get their pictures taken. As any parent knows, the more you try to get them to do something, the more they resist,  If you have an idea in your head and it doesn’t work, move on.
• For siblings, give them something to sit on or in. I’m famous for my little red wagon. It’s the best investment I got 15 years ago.

Paula is an award-winning and nationally-recognized photographer for her published work in newspapers and magazines.   She has been nominated for and won several national and international awards including the recognition of her and the photography staff at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette as finalists for the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for their coverage of the Worcester Warehouse fire that killed six Worcester, MA firefighters. Paula has won National Press Photographers Association, New England Associated Press Editors Association awards for her photojournalism work as well as local advertising awards for her photography. She is  a member of such professional organizations as the Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographers Association of  Massachusetts and American Society of Photographers .

In 2009 Paula was the recipient of the Hallmark Award for best color portrait, Kodak Gallery Portrait Award , the highest scoring portrait print, judges choice ribbon and 3 blue merit ribbons at the Professional Photographers Association of Massachusetts annual print competition. In 2010,  2011, 2102, 2013 and 2014.  Paula’s work was recognized and awarded the highest honor of Loan Collection and General Collection at the Professional Photographers of America International Photographic Competition.  Recently Paula Swift Photography was featured by CBS Boston as one of the best Boston Family Photographers. Paula continues grow her craft through education and love for photography by attending professional photography seminars, workshops and started sharing knowledge through speaking at seminars in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Her work has been published in a variety of publications, including The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Times, Time, Newsweek, USA Today, and Esquire.

In 2015, Paula Swift began teaching other photographers through the Professional Photographer’s of America Super One Day classes about her newborn photography. She is also speaking throughout New England on her photojournalism experience and how she incorporates that unique career into her everyday portrait photography work for clients in the Boston area.

Paula who grew up in Longmeadow, MA currently lives in Framingham, Massachusetts with her husband Chris and their three sons Ryan, Trevor, and Logan … her inspirations.

Worcester Family Photographer | Shrewbury Photographer

Another fabulous session with this family that I have been photographing for over 4 years now. Each session is unique as their children and just as fun as the previous.
