Best Photography of 2011 | Boston Photographer MA

Happy New Year…its hard to believe 2012 is already here! 2011 was one of our busiest years yet and to showcase favorites from each session we decided to make best of photography collages. I had so much fun going through each session and picking out images, so many fun and exciting memories came flooding back. From expectant parents excited to meet their new baby(s), to watching all those new babies yawn and sleep during their sessions, sharing laughs and giggles with kids on the go, with a few bribes here and there to get them to cooperate, to enjoying warm sandy nights on the beach, playing in the leaves with families and capturing high school seniors in the beautiful light in the fall. Thank you everyone who I met and photographed in 2011 and I look forward to seeing you in 2012.

Enjoy!

Stress-Free Holiday Photography Tips | Boston Children’s Photographer

Now that Halloween is over, the holidays will be here before we know it. (yes I know ducking my head, they are really coming and quickly)

That means its time to start thinking about your photos for the holiday cards you’ll be sending this season. Hopefully you’ve already booked your holiday photography session with a professional photographer in your area.

If not, perhaps you’ll attempt to capture your children yourselves this year for your annual holiday card?

I thought it might be helpful to share a few tips that will help you get the most out of your holiday photography shoot with the least amount of stress.

Plan ahead: This is key to capturing your children naturally with the least amount of stress. Avoid nap time or that time of the day when your children might not be at their best – better know in my house as the “bewitching ” hour. If your children are sick the day you planned your shoot – POSTPONE IT. Trust me, if your children don’t feel well and are cranky it will show in the final portraits – it’s just not worth the stress. That’s a key in my photography sessions: NO STRESS!  :)

Dress for Success: Plan the clothing out ahead of time.
It doesn’t matter whether you’ll be wearing your holiday best or a more casual timeless look – you need to plan it out!
Stay away from loud large logos or clothing that clashes. The “rainbow look” for families went out with the 1980s, so always consider timeless apparel. Dress your children in clothing that’s comfortable and that fits them properly. It’s always best to try on the clothing before the shoot…not the day of the shoot. Nothing is worse than ripping off the price tags as you arrive at the studio and learn that the clothing doesn’t fit your child properly.  If your photography shoot is planned for outdoors dress appropriately for the weather. If its cold outside dress them in layers or in coats that compliment their outfits. If its hot make sure they won’t get over heated. Another key thing in my photography is comfort. If you’re children are comfortable in their clothes they’ll be happy and content which makes my job easier.
Remember not everyone has to match but its best that everyone has coordinating colors in their outfits.  Remember, you want your portraits to be about your children, not their clothing. Unless you’re going with a fun idea that features the outfit – then go for it. :)

Have Fun: Stress is normal but don’t let it dominate the day. Once you’ve stressed about your clothing before the big day – Let the stress go & enjoy your session. If your children feel your stress for getting the perfect photo, they will be stressed too. I can assure you that if you bring stress to the session the shoot won’t go as planned. Let your children be themselves. Let them laugh, crying or run around – this is what tells the story of your child so don’t try to control the environment. If things aren’t going well in the studio (or your home), take them outdoors where they can be themselves. Local parks, playing in the leaves, at the beach (if you’re in a warmer climate) and at play always help children feel more comfortable.

Minor props are acceptable but don’t let them take over the photo. I prefer simple things like a holiday book to flip through or a favorite toy to play with. These can help young children to feel comfortable during the photo shoot as well.

For those of you attempting to capture your children yourselves turn off the flash. Use natural light indoors and out.

Be sure to get down to your children’s level. I like to lay on my belly and look up at them or have them lay down. Use creative high & low angles and get up close capture their faces and expressions.

Never shoot in full sunlight because it causes squinting and raccoon eyes.  The best time of day to shoot during the holidays is before 9:30am and after 3pm.

Just because its the holidays doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be a holiday themed shoot. Again think timeless…you want the recipient of your holiday cards and photos to keep the photos and not throw them out or in their holiday card drawer when the holidays are over.

I love to capture my three children all year long at the beach, in the leaves and in the snow. Usually my holiday photo card doesn’t even say “holidays” but I can slip the image into a holiday card or choose a card template that says holidays.  I love showing friends and family what my children look like without having to worry about it screaming holiday photo. Holding hands and walking, playing ring-around-the-rosey, or even just sitting singing their favorite song takes the edge off and offers those natural smiles and contagious giggles that I love.

Finally, don’t force your children to get their pictures taken. Any parent knows that the more you try to get them to do something the more they’ll resist. Try to make it fun and of course a little bribery reward goes a long way. I know first hand with my three busy boys a special treat for those adorable smiles work very well :)

Enjoy your holiday shoot and remember to have fun.

I hope you find these tips helpful for your holiday photo shoot. Please feel free to leave anything ideas that have work for you in the comment area.

Here are some children photography session  examples that I feel would work on any holiday card …

Boston Children’s Photographer | Outdoor Children’s Session | Framingham Photographer

It was wonderful seeing this family again to photograph their children for the holidays. We lucked out with a very warm November afternoon and they had beautiful fall foliage in their yard. The youngest daughter was so much fun to photograph…full of personality and her “play” outfit was stylish and fun. Here are some favorites…

Fun in a Winter Wonderland | Framingham Children’s Photographer | Snowy Day Photo Shoot

Happy New Year….can’t believe 2009 will be over in hours. Looking forward to a fun and exciting 2010 … along with lots of blogging to catch up on. So many great sessions from these past few months to catch up on. Almost seems cruel to share a beach session while its 30 degrees and snowing out…hahaha. I’ll wait until its colder. :)

So I’d thought I share one of my little inspirations who is not so little anymore. I had to go to the studio today for a bit, so we stopped to take a few fun photos in the snow on our way back. He loves the snow and it gave him a little fresh air fun while getting lots of that cooped up in the house energy out. Here are some favs …

Holiday Portraits Story on NECN | MA Portrait Photographer

Phew I did it… even though I was scared to death of LIVE TV, I survived my interview with Leslie Gaydos on NECN Morning Report about Tips to getting that Holiday Portrait…which was shown Live ( did I say Live???) :) She was so great to talk with and put me at ease right away…a true pro! I was shocked that I forgot that the cameras were there and I was live on air. I was even more amazed how many photos of mine they showed. I sent them tons and they used all of them..LOL.
Thank you again Leslie and NECN Producer Deb for inviting me on the show today! Here is a LINK to see the segment

Children’s Photographer MA | Framingham Photographer

I have no other way to described this other than “the stars aligned” for this shoot. Those of you who have young children know how much fun preparing for a photo session can be. :) Now add 3 brothers all with in a 4 year span of each other and their crazy mother who is a photographer and all she wants is a nice fall portrait of her beautiful sons…its a disaster in the making. But…I did it!!!! I was all by myself too..no kid wrangler or my personal therapist when I attempt to do this every year aka daddy. My oldest who is 6 yrs old came home from school and I said lets go play in the leaves. I quickly grabbed some clothes for them to look somewhat decent in. Nah…took him out of those – my oldest is always the first to model what might work because getting my 4 yr and 2 yr olds into clothes…happens once a day and I wasn’t going to chance them quitting on me before we even started. So finally light bulb moment grabbed 3 vests that I knew would compliment one another and their white turtle necks to keep them warm. Dressed them and we were off. Realizing that sun was going down, I knew we had to get there and no dilly dallying…my oldest knew what I was up too and kept things quiet. The other two…not a clue; we were just going to go play in some leaves. So we get there and I said hey boys look at the yellow leaved road…they are very into The Wizard of Oz right now. Just as I raised my camera I said go out and find the Wizard of Oz at the end of that road ( not a real road) but you should probably hold hands..right? ” Ok mommy” and they were off. click..click…click and squeels of excitement in my head..did I actually get them to do it all together, no fighting, no crying and no screaming ( from me usually..lol). Quick look at the back of the camera ( chimping as we call it) and bam I knew I got something. Phew…from there they went and turned around still holding hands and walked back smiling and even some eye contact…again thank you stars for one thing a photographer wants of her own children. Especially when she does it daily for other families..thank you! Ok I did a little bribing after that, they were getting hungry and I said ok 15 more minutes of fun playing in the leaves and mommy will take you to McD’s…well they jumped in the air…threw leaves and went discovering and playing more. I got another 20 min. out them before the sunset and we were on our way. My boys were just so much fun to photograph on this quick last minute shoot and the colors were fabulous. Its so hard to judge when we will have peak foliage here in Metrowest Boston…but this time I timed it right. So yes I took a few hours off in the busiest time of the year but it was all so worth it…for my peace of mind and love of my boys. They are growing so fast right before my eyes. Thank you for letting me share the inspirations in my life with you. The sweetest part of the whole thing; my 4 yr old woke up this morning and said “mommy, thank you for taking us to see the leaves yesterday. I had a lot of fun and I smiled for you too.”….sigh life is good!

2007 Year in Review | Paula Swift Photography

This the first time Paula Swift Photography has created a year in review slideshow. It was a time consuming task but a fun one. It was great to remember all the wonderful people I had met and photographed this past year. All the fleeting moments I was invited to capture. Those beautiful children who had no idea what they were in for when I arrived. All the fun and unexpected times that was I able to document and helped to create lasting memories was just incredible to remember.

So if you have some time…
sit back and enjoy the 2007 YEAR IN REVIEW SLIDESHOW

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bedford Photographer | Boston Children’s Photographer

I had the opportunity to photograph 3 beautiful sisters in their home during the holiday season. The Christmas tree coupled with the scenic window where you could see some recent snow in their yard offered a nice holiday backdrop for the session. The older 2 girls were great fun and kept me on the go as my eyes chanced them with my cameras, while their sweet little sister took it all in. Here are some favorites…
